Lab times in PT school were such a blast! In one lab, Dr. Selina Morgan, who is much much smaller than I am, used me to demonstrate that proper mechanics would allow even a small person to transfer a completely dependent larger person. Since I was the heaviest person in my class I got to do the honors of being the patient. It was hard to stop laughing through the experience, and she told me to “hold still, you’re paralyzed.” She, of course, transferred me without any problem. Such a fun and eye opening way to learn.
I helped my little brother relearn to walk when he was four years old after breaking his femur and being immobilized for a very long period of time. This was years before I ever knew what physical therapy was, but as my little brother regained his ability to walk, run and keep up with his five older siblings and his cheerful manner returned. I distinctly remember thinking to myself, whatever this is, I want to do this for my life. And here we are!
I practice in Hanover, New Hampshire and have the pleasure to work with a mixture of athletes from Dartmouth College, as well as members of surrounding towns providing specialized one-on-one care and absolute love it!
I am also incredibly blessed to work as senior faculty for the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy which allows me to teach courses to fellows in training with our program, and many others, around the country.
Stay humble and never stop learning! Really, truly good mentors are so hard to come by. Look deeply for the individual skill or sets of skills that are polished in everyone around you – no matter your setting. Take complete responsibility for your own growth and you’ll be stunned at what you become.
Living in New England now, fall is absolutely magical! Hiking in the White Mountains, apple picking and building forts in the woods with my kids is about all a guy could dream of.
