What does transformational nursing mean to you?

It involves nurturing the whole person by considering physical, emotional and social needs. This approach includes treating patients with empathy, understanding their values and preferences, and respecting their individual requirements.

During my final semester of nursing school, Dr. Richardson emphasized that the patient is the most important entity in the hospital, and prioritizing their care is paramount. Embracing transformational nursing entails assuming leadership roles within clinical settings.

I was elected Chairman of the Nurses Ethic Council at University Hospital, which allows me to participate in policy making, inspire and mentor colleagues, promote continuous learning and implement evidence-based practices. I highly value teamwork and collaboration, adapt to emerging technologies and health care trends, and address systemic issues such as equity and access to health care in the community.

My goal is to bring about meaningful change within the health care system in our community.

Why did you choose nursing, and how has your purpose evolved over time?

Nursing is a calling for me because it truly makes a difference in people’s lives. It offers care, comfort and support to those in need, and it’s incredibly rewarding. I was inspired to pursue nursing by observing my sister-in-law who worked in the surgical trauma ICU at University Hospital.

Nursing offers many career paths and is in high demand for skilled professionals. I began my career in the acute care surgical trauma unit and later transferred to the surgical trauma ICU. Currently, I work as an invasive nurse in the cardiac catheterization lab at University Hospital. I enjoy nursing because it provides opportunities for career advancement and the many specializations available within the field. Nursing is a dynamic profession that requires continuous learning and adaptation.

What legacy do you hope to leave as a nurse?

I dream of leaving a lasting mark that reflects my professional journey and personal values. I want to be remembered for providing personal care and attention to all my patients. I strive to make each interaction feel special and respectful, ensuring that patients feel valued and understood during what could be one of their toughest times.

I am a strong advocate for patients’ rights and needs, and I want to make sure their voices are heard and that they receive fair and equitable care. I hope to mentor and inspire future generations of nurses by sharing my knowledge, skills and wisdom.
